I saved the best for last. Seriously, figure out how to relieve some stress with you, your Team, and your Peers in these crazy times (with social distancing, of course). Have a “crazy sock day” and post pictures to social media. Build paper airplanes and see how far they go down the hall. Do “dad jokes” and groan. Find something to laugh about and blow off a moment of steam. Or if you’re not exactly the extrovert, lean on someone on your Team who is to fill that role. Actually anything by Lencioni is fantastic, and they’re quick reads. I’d also highly recommend The Ideal Team Player and The Advantage. Read. Maybe start a book club with your Teams or Peers. With social distancing, we can even do this through a webex. Here are a few of my favorite Leadership books: As Leaders, we must be able to help drive change. Google some classes and articles on Change Management (non-IT related) or Change Leadership. It’ll help you understand how to better work with your Teams.ĥ. Project management – Okay this is one is a little selfish on my part, but really, learn how to run a great meeting, or take better meeting notes, or learn how to build a timeline with tasks for a simple project.Ĭhange – Change happens quickly and if we don’t adjust, we die. What new tricks can you and your People find? Move your files to the cloud in One Drive. Learn how to put together killer PPT decks. Learn some Excel skills. Office 365 – How many great tools are encompassed in this suite? Do you know what to do with them? Harness the power of Teams. Or One Note. Learn and grow. If you or someone on your team has idle time, ask them to learn something new to teach the rest of your Team. Ask them to be curious. Be innovative. Seriously, now is a great time to look at some of the stuff we do on a daily basis and ask: “Why do we do it this way?” “How can I do this better?” “What can I offload to an IC to grow them?” If your answer is, “That’s the way we’ve/I’ve always done it,” it’s time to change that thinking. The economy is going to force all kinds of change in the near future and we’re not immune from becoming a dinosaur. Ask your People what ideas they have. I’ll bet you’d be surprised at what they put up with every day that frustrates them.Ĥ. Support each other. Some Teams are slammed and barely breathing from a snorkel in a hurricane. Others have a few folks who have bandwidth as projects or work has slowed. Ask your Peers if there is something that their Team needs help with. If you have someone who can take an hour or two to fill in with “grunt work”, it gives others more time to focus on things that keep our operation going, possibly. And as a Leader, look for ways you can shed the load from some of your People. Or off of you. Recognize those people who step up to help because they may become the new Leaders who will someday replace us.ģ. “Cute shoes!” Okay this one is in there to see if you’re still with me.Ģ. “ I don’t know.” This is almost as important as telling them what you do know, especially because things are changing by the day. “ Thank you.” Make it sincere. Do it in person, even if it means coming in during off-hours. Or hand write a note appreciating them for something specific. Now more than ever, we need Leaders not managers. Our People need us and we need them. We need each other. And now more than ever we need to communicate what we can about what we know and don’t know. There are a few simple words you can say to people that may help: It’s early, y’all. My mind has been spinning since about 2am, as I’m sure many of you are doing more of this week (or weeks for some of us) and I had to get some of this written down.
